Niamh Ni Charra - " The Hag at the Churn" - Hammersmith Irish Cultural Centre, London 03.04.2008 http://www.niamhnicharra.com/ http://www.myspace.com/niamhnicharra http://www.irishcentrehammersmith.co.uk/ Recorded on the 3rd April 2008 at Hammersmith Irish Cultural Centre, London Niamh has been presented with "The Best Traditional Music Act 2008" award by The Irish World. . The Irish World is the largest newspaper for the Irish community in Britain, and hosts the annual awards recognising the contributions of rising and established Irish stars both in Ireland and around the world. Niamh launched her debut album at the Gathering festival in Killarney on 25.02.07 . The invited guests who included many well known musicians were treated to a 30 minute performance by Niamh and Guitarist Mike Galvin, who features on the album. Some of my footage of this can be found on YouTube Niamh's album "Ón Dá Thaobh / From Both Sides" has been listed in respected music reviewer Colin Irwin's Top Ten Folk Album's of 2007 for MOJO magazine. Niamh's album "Ón Dá Thaobh / From Both Sides" is available through ITunes. "Ón Dá Thaobh / From Both Sides". The album is an opportunity to showcase Niamh's virtuosity on both fiddle and concertina, and she is joined on the album by well-known musicians Brendan Begley, Robbie Harris, Eoghan O Neil, Mike Galvin, Cathal Synnott and Conor Shiel.. The album certainly has variety - besides the expected mix of Irish tunes (jigs, reels, hornpipes, slow airs etc.), there are also tunes from the United States and Canada (Cape Breton), a set of Hungarian folk tunes and, icompositions of Niamh's own. and a classical piece for concertina from Italian composer Giulio Regondi (1822 1872) who was an early virtuoso on the newly invented instrument. Niamh Ní Charra hails from Killarney, County Kerry in the south west of Ireland. Strongly influenced by the wealth of local Sliabh Luachra musicians, she started playing music at the early age of 4, under the tutelage of well known local musician Nicky McAuliffe. Equally talented on fiddle and concertina, she has won numerous awards, including Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann, Oireachtas, and Slógadh Náisiúnta and has represented Ireland at folk festivals in Britain and France. Somewhat of a child prodigy, she had support gigs for The Chieftains, and Noel Hill under her belt before she reached her teens. Despite this rich background, she put aside her music to persue a career in Electronic Engineering. After graduating with honours, Niamh was employed by an Irish software company who regularly sent her on business trips to Boston. Here she was exposed to a continuous flow of Irish musicians (Arcady, Sharon Shannon, Nomos) as well as locally based musicians (Paddy Keenan , Seamus Connolly, Tommy McCarthy). The draw of the music proved too strong, and Niamh decided to resign from work to persue a career in music. She moved to Cork to take a year-long course in 'Music, Management, and Sound' at Coláiste Stiofáin Naofa, where she graduated with distinctions in every subject - the only student ever to have achieved this feat. The college subsequently awarded her "Musician of the Year". She swiftly followed this with recordings for Irish radio and television, and performances with Riverdance 's european troupe in Europe, Asia and on board the QE2, before joining the U.S. troupe in 1998. Niamh performed with Riverdance from that date until December 2005, touring with them in North America. From Mexico to Vancouver, and Los Angeles to Broadway, New York, Niamh has delighted audiences with her fiery fiddling, fancy footwork and dazzling smiles. More recently she shared her talents in Riverdance's Irish and Far East productions performing in her native capital as well as the more exotic locations of Tokyo and Taipei among others. She has taught both fiddle and concertina at Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann's national headquaters, An Cultúrlann in Monkstown, and regularly gives workshops. At the time of this filming, Niamh is a member of the Carlos Nunez band and tours both with them and as a solo artist.

영국에 불고 있는 한류 Now, for many young Londoners, the first thing that comes to mind when they think Korea is K-pop, and as testament of its popularity, a number of Korean cultural events have been taking place in the capital and around the UK. It really shows the growing popularity of not only K-pop, but also hallyu, or Korean wave in general. Our correspondent, Kwon Jang-ho, went to check some of these events out. "London is widely considered one of the busiest and most cosmopolitan cultural hubs in the world. But in recent years, one culture in particular has not only made an impression, it's made waves." Korean culture -- including food, music and art -- has taken hold in London and there are now traces of it all throughout the city. Demand for it is such that British audiences are now seeking a deeper understanding of their experiences. "I'm here at the Korean Cultural Center, located in the heart of London. Inside, a special course is about to take place called the K-pop Academy, which aims to help young people interested in Korean culture learn more about it. Let's go take a look inside." The latest session has just started and it's orientation week, where participants introduce themselves and talk about how they became fans of Korean culture. Over the next ten Saturdays, these 30 participants will take part in classes and activities that aim to give them first-hand experience with different aspects of Korean culture. "Once they complete the course, these K-pop fans can be able to develop a deeper understanding of Korea and Korean culture, and from this we hope that their affinity with Korea will last a lifetime." "It was listening to K-pop and then reading lyrics and the language that I realized just how different it was from English. So I really thought that it should be something I should look into and research a lot more." People in London aren't the only ones seeking a deeper understanding of Korean culture. "I'm now in Oxford -- home, of course, to one of the most famous and oldest universities in the world. And today they're hosting a special international forum on the very new topic, Hallyu studies." Supported by Korea's culture and foreign ministries, the fourth annual World Congress on Hallyu is an academic gathering that seeks to delve into the Korean Wave phenomenon... and study its impact on the world. Experts from around the world and members of the public were invited to participate and discuss K-pop, food, literature and other elements of Korean culture. "Korean cultural products have already spread to every country in the world. So it's very important for us to understand what is actually behind that." Back in London, British audiences are discovering Korean music that goes beyond K-pop. A concert series featuring a variety of music ranging from jazz to traditional... is taking place throughout September and October under the umbrella of the K-Music Festival. But on Tuesday it was the turn of Idiotape, a Seoul-based band that has been creating a buzz in the underground dance music scene since 2008. The London audience was won over by the performance and the house was definitely rocking. "It was so much fun. I'm so happy that a band like this from Korea was able to come to the UK. I'm really glad that I brought my English friends along." "I thought Idiotape were fantastic. I thought they took some classic British dance music and did it really, really well." "I had a really brilliant time actually. We were talking about it tonight, about trying to get some sort of understanding of where Korean popular music has got to. And it was really interesting to find out what is going on." A rich mix of Korean cultural influences is fast developing in London and the UK, giving British audiences a better picture of all that Korea has to offer. Kwon Jang-ho, Arirang News, London. In this spotlight from TEDxBrixton on great community projects worth highlighting, Director of The Black Cultural Archives, Paul Reid gives a short talk on the project which collects, preserves and celebrates the history of black people in Britain. The work of the archives challenges the conventional slavery narrative of black people's involvement in Britain. About Paul Reid Paul Reid is the Director of Black Cultural Archives (BCA) and founder of the ORIGIN rites of passage programme. Paul joined BCA in October 2006 to drive-forward and establish the first national Black heritage centre in the UK. Prior to this he joined the Brixton Town Centre Team in 1999 for Lambeth Council and became Brixton Town Centre Manager, where he was responsible for engaging local people and empowering communities through community---led regeneration. This work included working on Windrush Square and Raleigh Hall. The Black heritage centre will open in 2014. About TEDx In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

The spectacle was arranged by American photographer Spencer Tunick, famous for his ambitious installations featuring crowds of clothless, and was commissioned by the city’s Ferens Art Gallery for Hull’s UK City of Culture celebrations next year.Sea of Hull by Spencer Tunick.Roads in the city centre were closed between midnight and 10am as the participants, who came in all shapes and sizes, posed in locations that reflected Hull’s maritime history. The New York-based artist had body paints made in four shades of blue taken from the Ferens gallery’s collection.Tunick, who has just finished working on an installation in Bogotá, said that Hull’s had been one of the best turnouts for a photoshoot and the best in the UK, beating Gateshead in 2005 and Salford in 2010. “I needed around 2,500 to 3,000 [volunteers] to do this work and 3,200 came. I was incredibly lucky to be able to fill up streets into the distance,” he said.Volunteers, who were unpaid, arrived at a meeting point in the city centre at 3am, where they stripped off and helped to paint each other. The crowds were then ordered into position by megaphone by Tunick’s assistants, who he calls “clothless wranglers”, during the three-hour photoshoot. Sarah Hossack, 30, a trainee teacher, says she had second thoughts when her alarm went off at 1.30am, but that it didn’t take long for her to get into the swing of things. “Everybody just got involved, so we didn’t feel like it was that weird,” she said. “When you see people with clothes on you’re like, ‘These people need to get clothless’.”Danielle Robilliard, 38, a social worker, said the mass clothless gathering was like being part of a special club. “I knew the experience itself was going to be great, but the point when you had to get clothless in front of lots of people was terrifying. Actually, within minutes it felt normal.”Tunick said there was something about the human body and how it was juxtaposed with public space that had inspired his work. “The natural, soft vulnerable body that’s up against the concrete world – it creates a dynamic that interests me,” he said.Tunick said. “It’s the idea that the bodies and humanity is flooding the streets,” he added. The day I got clothless for Spencer Tunick."I was very surprised to see so many older people take part and so many people who had problems walking – wheelchairs, crutches, leg braces,” the photographer said. “They were resilient and we had young and old and I am so thankful to them.” The crowd included 80-year-old art collector Stéphane Janssen from the US, who has posed 20 previous times, first at the age of 64. He said the lengthy photoshoot had been a little chilly, but that it was nothing in comparison with Tunick’s installation in Dublin on an even colder summer morning in 2008. He added: “My children are very conservative. They don’t think it’s totally proper to have their father’s butt on a museum wall, but I love it.” Kirsten Simister, curator of art at Ferens, said the gallery was thrilled by the turnout. “It took off like a rocket from day one, with an overwhelming number of people signing up and we are delighted to see how Spencer has brought them together today to create some remarkable new images and unforgettable memories for themselves.” Peace Body Rock - Spencer Tunick Installation in Charco Ingenio as part of TEDx San Miguel De Allende, Guanajuato MEXICO. The day 100 naked women welcomed Trump to Cleveland Photographer Spencer Tunick's latest art project is first of many planned protests.Well, it's one way of saying hi. On July 17, 2016 — the eve of the Republican National Convention in Cleveland — photographer Spencer Tunick posed 100 women — stripped clothless and holding large mirror discs — across the water from Quickens Loan Arena, where Donald Trump will become the GOP's presidential candidate. The project, called "Everything She Says Means Everything," has been in the works since 2013. Tunick, known for his photographs of clothless subjects, wrote on his website, "Republicans, Democrats and all other political parties were welcome to take part reflecting their anger through art against the hateful repressive rhetoric of many in the Republican Party towards women and minorities. "(Donald) Trump and (Mike) Pence are giving many in America the belief that is OK to hate." Tunick’s most notable works have been commissioned by Art Basel, Switzerland (1999), Institut Cultura, Barcelona (2003), XXV Biennial de Sao Paulo, Brazil (2002), The Saatchi Gallery(2003), MOCA Cleveland (2004), Vienna Kunsthalle (2008), among others.
